Legal Metrology
The Department of Legal Metrology is established under the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food & Public Distribution to regulate and maintain uniformity and accuracy in all weights and measures, weighing and measuring instruments used all over India.
The regulation and standardization is governed by The Legal Metrology Act, 2009, Legal Metrology General Rules, 2011 & Legal Metrology (Packaged Commodities) Rules, 2011 and the compliance under these laws is applicable to all manufacturers, traders, retailers and importers of the weights and measures, weighing and measuring instruments
The Packaged Commodities, Rules, 2011 specifies the declarations to be made and the manner of making such declarations on every pre-packed commodities intended for retail sale
